Friday 7th August - walk ***** - Sunrise walk to Jacobs Ladder in
Felixstowe – sunny.
After receiving some bad news from my sister that my 90-year-old Dad is
unwell I did not sleep well so when Mag and I woke at 5 we decided to walk
down to the prom to see the sunrise as we haven’t done that for a while!
With 35 degrees forecast it is always best to get about early to avoid the
heat and crowds that are flocking to Felixstowe! On reaching the prom we
discover it is a little early in the year to see the sun rise at the bottom
of our road so we walk to Jacobs Ladder to get a better view. There is the
usual joggers, that doesn’t seem to bring them much pleasure by the looks
on their faces! Several open water swimmers were making the most of the
calm conditions and two couples were setting up a windbreak so they could
cook their breakfast. The sun was coming up beyond posh flats causing the
sky to go a lovely colour as we past loads of campervans parked up for the
night at The Fludgers, we are not missing going away in ours as everyone
and their Uncle seem to have got one now :( Three teenagers are already
sitting on the wall at the end of the prom watching the sunrise as we stop
and I take some pics. Bawdsey looks nice shrouded in a misty haze! Then
back home where we pack our breakfast, make a flask and head straight out
on our bikes, leaving home at 6.45.
Friday 7th August – bike ***** - Two Rivers route Deben to the Orwell
including breakfast at the Water Ski Jetty.
Back done to the prom we follow the same route as our earlier walk and if
anything, the breeze has got even lighter. The Dip end is very quiet, just
now we love it and the Deben is like a mill pool. Yet more boat reflection
pics at Felixstowe Ferry, I must have hundreds now but it is hard to tire
of this picturesque spot:) Then out onto the Deben path which we have all
to ourselves, just sky larks and pipets and banks of yellow flowers. We
soon reach our picnic table at the water ski jetty with the tide very low
we are surrounded by loads of black headed gulls and calling curlews with
fish jumping in the river as we tact into our Weetabix and fruit with a
cuppa:) Apart from the call of the birds the only sound was the slight
drone of traffic on the distant A 14 :( I had just said to Mag that the
paramotor will fly over soon and he did, a perfect morning for flying too!
After a relaxing half hour, we continue our journey taking the second
footpath coming out at Falkenham Church set against a deep blue sky,
lovely. Then its across bridle ways to Kirton where we decide to head over
towards Levington so we can see the Orwell and take the tree lined path
back to Felixstowe. We bump into Maggie Coles out walking her lively dog,
Ted and we stop for a chat, seeing some deer in the distance. We stop at
the small pond with the large willow tree with its large shoal of Rudd to
watch a dog have a swim. There are loads of wheat fields ready to harvest
but not a combine in sight. We reach Felixstwoe docks where Mag heads for
home while I carry on to the viewing Point to check out the new parking
meters, luckily not working at the moment, there is nothing free in this
world anymore! I have a few minutes sitting on a seat watching a small
container ship enter port before going for a paddle by the old wooden jetty
on Languard beach. Then back to our windsurfing car park at The Manor,
still free at the moment but I am sure the meters are on the way, but
traveller seem to have taken over a section with caravan, trailer tents and
tents, really taking the micky again, let’s hope they don’t leave a
mess when they eventually leave! Now for the worst bit, the final part of
the prom now very busy with people making the most of wall to wall sunshine
and calm water. I bump into windsurfing mate Neil Hurrell also out on his
bike so stop for a chat before continuing home.
So, what a top start to the day, sunrise walk followed by a 4.5 hour bike
ride covering nearly 20 miles and with no wind this afternoon, it was time
for lunch followed by back exercises in a very hot back garden before
dozing off in the peace and quiet:) There is a chance we might get enough
breeze from the East over the weekend for a foil, fingers crossed as the
heatwave is set to continue!
